Hinsdale Therapy Group is a counseling practice serving the mental health needs of people of all ages. Amanda Scanlon and Julie Giers founded the group in 2003 and continue to operate it with personal and client-centered attention only a clinician-owned practice can provide.
Our treatment philosophy emphasizes strengths, social connection, and self-awareness. All clients receive therapy that is easily accessible, supportive and individualized—here, treatment is driven by the client’s needs rather than insurance, policy, and procedural demands. We understand what you need, and match you with a therapist and an approach that will get you there.
All therapists in the practice are licensed and offer specialized services targeted to your needs. The carefully assembled team specializes in each age range and phase of life. Most importantly, the team is committed to operating from a place of understanding and getting you on your way to feeling better.
Amanda co-founded Hinsdale Therapy Group in 2003 after working as a therapist in a variety of settings.
Amanda sees clients facing a variety of issues from heightened anxiety, depression, and ADHD to communication and social/relationship issues. Whenever possible, Amanda incorporates family members into the treatment process. While Amanda has a unique specialty with young children and families, she also enjoys working with individual adults and couples.
Prior to HTG, Amanda worked as a senior clinician at a community mental health center as well as at residential treatment facilities for children and adolescents with emotional and behavioral problems. Amanda has supervised other therapists working on their master’s degrees and license.
Amanda earned her Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Loyola University in Chicago in 1999, with a concentration in children and families. Amanda’s research centers on behavioral and emotional issues that are specific to young children. Amanda is a member of the Illinois Mental Health Counselors Association and the American Counseling Association.
Outside of the office, Amanda enjoys spending time with her husband and three energetic sons.
In 2003, Julie co-founded Hinsdale Therapy Group as the culmination of a career in the social services field. Her clients benefit from her over 20 years of experience serving people across the life spectrum and with the entire range of life’s problems.
Julie specializes in helping adults and couples overcome anxiety, depression, relationship struggles, and difficulty managing life transitions, losses, or traumas.
Prior to HTG, Julie worked as a senior therapist for a community mental health center, as a case manager for a foster care agency, and as a counselor and house manager for various group homes (e.g., at a group home for at-risk, adolescent girls and a group home for adults with severe psychiatric disabilities). She has supervised other counselors as well as students working on their master’s degrees and license. Julie also spent time volunteering as a victim’s advocate for a sexual assault crisis center.
Julie holds a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana. Beginning with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, Julie has dedicated her career to helping clients live more productive, healthy, and joy-filled lives. She is a member of the National Association of Social Workers.
When not at the office, Julie treasures her family and close friends, spending time outdoors, and sharing laughter with others as much as possible.
